The e-commerce platform Etsy, Inc. announced that starting in August 2026, it will ban the sale of products made with animal furs. The measure was communicated to the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT) and updated in its Animal-Origin Products Policy.
The new regulation establishes that Etsy prohibits products made with natural furs from animals primarily sacrificed for their pelts, including raw furs, finished garments, and accessories made from mink, fox, rabbit, and coyote. Thousands of listings will be removed before the deadline.
The Role of Activist Campaigns
The decision comes after a 58-day campaign led by CAFT, which included more than 50 protests in 17 cities against Etsy and its affiliates.
One of the most significant moments occurred at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecommunications Conference in San Francisco, where activists interrupted the presentation of CEO Kruti Patel Goyal and CFO Lanny Baker in front of investors.
Reactions and Global Context
For Suzie Stork, CAFT’s executive director, the measure sets a new standard: “The use of furs is in decline. Designers are abandoning them, publications are not promoting them, and now Etsy is banning them. The industry has nowhere left to hide”.
The organization announced that it will now focus its pressure on the Milan Fashion Week and conglomerates like LVMH, where protests against the use of furs continue.

Impact on the Fur Industry
Fur production has been widely criticized for:
- Animal cruelty: millions of animals suffer in fur farms.
- Environmental impact: soil and water contamination.
- Public health risks: transmission of diseases like COVID-19 in mink farms.
The global trend shows an accelerated decline in the use of furs in fashion. Leading designers had already abandoned these materials before official bans.
New York Joins the Change
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced that starting in September 2026, it will ban the use of furs at the New York Fashion Week (NYFW), following London’s example.
The measure aims to eliminate animal cruelty and responds to the declining popularity of furs, with exceptions only for indigenous communities.
Sustainable Alternatives
The industry is promoting alternative materials:
- Recycled synthetics.
- Bio-based textiles.
- Technological innovations that replicate the texture and appearance of fur without using animals.
Etsy’s ban on fur sales and NYFW’s decision reflect an irreversible cultural and market shift. Modern fashion is moving away from animal fur and towards sustainable materials, responding to social and ethical pressure.
The fur sector is facing a terminal crisis, while environmental awareness and animal welfare gain ground in the global industry.
