Alarm in Concordia: Numerous Dead Fish Appear on the Banks of a Stream

Numerous dead fish have appeared at the mouth of the Yuquerí Chico stream and the Uruguay River, in the area of Benito Legerén, in the Concordia department. This distressing situation is concerning both residents and fishermen.

Residents and fishermen state that the main cause of this mortality is water pollution, “caused by industrial waste that is disposed of from the industrial park.”

A similar scenario occurred days ago along the entire Yuquerí Chico stream, a place known for its clear waters and as a natural refuge for various species.

Residents and fishermen are alerting authorities about the severe degradation of the stream. “The stream has lost its transparency and purity,” they remarked, highlighting the negative impact of pollution on local wildlife, the numerous dead fish, and the quality of life of those who depend on this natural environment.

The local inhabitants are demanding constant monitoring of industrial waste and are requesting concrete measures to curb pollution, preserve the Yuquerí Chico stream, and protect the ecosystem that depends on it.

Conditions of the Yuquerí Stream Basin in the Concordia Region

The growing development of unsustainable economic activities, the location of industries in urban belts, the unplanned expansion of urban areas, and various socio-cultural issues are associated with different socio-environmental problems in cities across developing countries.

Consequently, many cities in the country are affected by these types of issues, making it necessary to consider proposals that manage water resources of each basin in an integrated manner.

As a result of these developments, sources of pollution that alter water quality have been identified, as well as various human activities that disturb the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in much of the basin.

Based on this, it was concluded that water quality and the ecosystem deteriorate as one moves toward the mouth of the stream, with high levels of microbiological contamination and ecosystem disruption in the middle and lower areas of the basin.

Given this situation, action proposals have been suggested to reduce the environmental impact of human activities, mitigate existing issues, and prevent future problems.
