Alert for illegal animal trafficking in Misiones: 128 specimens rescued from a veterinary clinic, some frozen

A judicial operation at a veterinary clinic in Posadas, Misiones, led to the rescue of 128 wild animals and revealed a severe case of illegal trafficking and mistreatment of wildlife.

Of these specimens, 14 were found dead, many frozen in a freezer.

The rest were in conditions of extreme overcrowding, malnourished, and in dirty spaces.

Illegal trafficking: how the judicial operation was conducted to save the animals

Judge Juan Manuel Montes ordered the raid that exposed the situation.

The OHANA Wildlife Conservation Center participated by providing technical support to identify and assess the condition of the animals.

Specialists found turtles, iguanas, lizards, caimans, and monkeys confined in tiny enclosures.

The animals lacked water and basic hygienic conditions. Some specimens were even stored in a freezer.

The place, which was supposed to function as a veterinary care space, presented a scene of abandonment and systematic mistreatment of wildlife .

The Dante Piesco Foundation and OHANA condemned the events and called for social reflection on wildlife trafficking.

“It saddened us to see animals that should be free in the Misiones jungle treated as if they were objects,” the organizations declared.

They added: “Each turtle, each lizard, each monkey is a living being that feels, suffers, and needs respect and freedom.”

The impact of illegal pet trade on biodiversity

The entities warned about the consequences of illegal pet trade on Misiones’ biodiversity: “Each wild animal captured to be sold is a story of pain.”

“Behind each turtle bought ‘because it looks cute’, there are dozens that die crushed or dehydrated. Nine out of ten do not arrive alive at their destination. It is not rescue; it is cruelty,” they warned.

It is essential to remember that raising, selling, or keeping wildlife as pets is prohibited by national and international laws.

These animals are an essential part of the ecosystem of the Misiones jungle and not objects for display.

The illegal animal trade destroys the natural balance and constitutes a crime against provincial biodiversity.

A call to action and social awareness against illegal animal trafficking

Following this trafficking discovery, the organizations urged the community not to buy or keep wild animals as pets.

They also requested to be informed about the issue and report situations of mistreatment or trafficking.

Both organizations emphasized that the goal is to defend a principle of humanity and respect for life, not to attack individuals.

“What happened cannot remain silent. As a society, we must decide whether we want a Misiones that respects life or one where the jungle becomes merchandise,” they stated.

And they emphasized that “Justice needs everyone’s support. There is no possible conservation without social awareness“.
