Animal Safety: an initiative from Brazil with international reach against animal cruelty on digital platforms

The Instituto Ampara Animal launched the international campaign Animal Safety, which seeks to mobilize organizations, activists, and citizens from different countries to confront the growing circulation of animal cruelty content on the internet.

The proposal aims to demand greater responsibility from digital platforms and promote public policies that prevent violence against animals from becoming normalized in virtual environments.

The problem in the digital space

The initiative arises in response to the increase of videos, broadcasts, and online groups that exhibit torture, exploitation, and violence towards animals, often amplified by algorithms and viral dynamics.

Research by the Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (SMACC) warns that these spaces are often linked to other forms of extreme violence, such as communities that promote self-harm, sexual exploitation, hate speech, and youth radicalization.

Juliana Camargo, president of the Instituto Ampara Animal, emphasized: “The internet cannot continue to be a space where cruelty becomes entertainment and generates engagement. Animal Safety is born to unite society and demand real changes”.

Global campaign strategy

  • International digital platform: will function as a hub for information, mobilization, and education.
  • Petition on Change.org: seeks to gather global support to demand stricter policies against animal cruelty content.
  • Alliance with SMACC: expands the network of organizations and strengthens pressure on tech companies and public authorities.
  • Communication and awareness: audiovisual content, participation of artists, creators, and opinion leaders.

Dimension of the problem

Recent data from SMACC identified more than 83,000 links with animal cruelty content circulating on major digital platforms during 2024, reinforcing the international dimension of the challenge.

Community and educational impact

The campaign seeks to especially alert parents and guardians about the exposure of children and adolescents to these contents.

Additionally, it promotes more effective mechanisms for reporting, removal, and prevention, along with legislative debates that hold accountable those who allow the dissemination of animal violence in digital environments.

The Instituto Ampara Animal

  • Brazilian NGO founded in 2010, led by women.
  • Recognized for its seriousness and commitment to the animal cause.
  • In 2015, it became the largest animal protection organization in Brazil.
  • Since 2019, it has been part of the list of the 100 best NGOs in the country.
  • Its mission: to transform society through advocacy, education, and awareness about animal rights.

The Animal Safety campaign represents an international effort to prevent the internet from continuing to be a space for the normalization of animal violence.

By uniting science, activism, communication, and political pressure, the initiative seeks to build safer and more responsible digital environments, where the protection of animals is a commitment shared by the entire society.
