Birdwatchers reached a new record a few weeks ago. Last Saturday, October 12th, people from 201 countries achieved a historic milestone.
They documented 7800 bird species in a single day, equivalent to over 70% of all known species on the planet.
This took place within an event known as the “Big Day” for birdwatchers. Not only did it set a world record, but it also marked an important moment for citizen science in ornithology.

This massive initiative offers science a global and unprecedented view of bird diversity on all continents.
The achievement of documenting 7800 species in one day reveals the ambition and effectiveness of birdwatchers worldwide. 748,000 people participated, also recording their sightings through 66,000 photographs.
The images are now part of a valuable scientific library for the study of global biodiversity.
