The Government of Corrientes has officially designated June 6th as the Day of the Correntino Jaguar, a date that celebrates the historic return of this species to the province.
The decision commemorates the birth of the first cubs in the Iberá Wetlands after more than 70 years of local extinction.
Now, five years after the first reintroduction of the species in the area and following a strong conservation effort, Iberá is home to more than 40 wild jaguars, making it the largest nucleus in the country.
Thus, the choice of the Day of the Jaguar emerged from a popular vote held during the 1st Festival of the Correntino Jaguar in San Miguel.
The Ministry of Tourism of Corrientes approved the resolution that gave official status to this environmental celebration.
Aramí and Mbareté: symbol of the jaguar’s return to Iberá
June 6th was marked in the environmental history of Corrientes by the birth of Aramí (“little piece of sky”) and Mbareté (“strong woman”) in the wild.
Both cubs, whose names in Guarani reflect the provincial cultural identity, represented the success of the reintroduction process.
This event confirmed that jaguars could reproduce again in Corrientes territory.
Thus, the birth became an emblem of hope for the recovery of regional biodiversity.
More than 40 specimens in the wild
Currently, more than 40 jaguars live in freedom in the Iberá Wetlands. The protected area is thus positioned as a model of ecological restoration at both regional and global levels.
The Corrientes experience demonstrated that coexistence between local communities and large predators is possible and sustainable.
Now, the Day of the Jaguar seeks to strengthen this bond between society and the species.
Itinerant festival throughout the province for the Day of the Jaguar
Following the official declaration of the Day of the Jaguar, the Festival of the Correntino Jaguar is projected as an annual and itinerant celebration.
The event will travel to different localities of the province to spread the importance of conservation.
The main objective of the Day of the Jaguar includes:
- Strengthening the bond between society and the species
- Promoting the cultural identity linked to Corrientes nature
- Consolidating community participation in environmental conservation
- Positioning the jaguar as a living symbol of the province
