Galápagos revives with 1,500 giant tortoises: restoring ecosystems and rewriting natural history

After 150 years of absence, the massive reintroduction of giant tortoises in the Galápagos Islands is repairing an ecosystem that had been left in ruins.

Between 1990 and 2020, more than 1,500 specimens were released, and their presence is restoring balance and diversity to a landscape that had lost its main herbivore.

The historical role of tortoises

When Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835, giant tortoises were the rulers of the landscape. Indiscriminate hunting and the introduction of external species brought them to the brink of extinction, leaving the Galápagos without its natural regulator.

For more than a century, invasive shrubs expanded, and fires altered the ecosystem’s behavior.

Ecosystem engineers

The released tortoises act as natural excavators: they knock down invasive vegetation, trample young shrubs, and keep corridors open for birds and lizards. This work, which previously required human crews and heavy machinery, is now done spontaneously and persistently.

Scientists compare them to African elephants for their ability to prevent shrubs from closing the landscape and to create a diverse and resilient mosaic.

Seed dispersers and soil fertilizers

In addition to opening paths, tortoises play a key role as seed dispersers. By ingesting whole fruits, they transport seeds in their digestive tract during journeys of up to five kilometers.

These seeds emerge wrapped in nutrient-rich dung, stimulating rapid germination in areas where native species hadn’t sprouted for decades.

A natural alternative to artificial engineering

Unlike dikes or industrial plants, tortoises feed on sunlight and plants, work with absolute persistence, and can live for over a century.

Their longevity surpasses any human political cycle, making them a natural and sustainable solution for ecosystem restoration.

Almost all subspecies are threatened by hunting, habitat loss, and invasive species, making conservation efforts urgent to restore their ecological role.

The return of giant tortoises demonstrates that nature can heal if its key piece is returned. What seemed like a symbol of slowness has become the fastest and most effective tool for a system to come back to life.

Galápagos is now a living laboratory that inspires global debates on how the reintroduction of suitable species can transform entire ecosystems.
