A group of **beavers** managed to save the **Czech Republic** government 1.2 million dollars by **building several dams** in two days, projects that authorities had planned seven years ago but had not yet started.
The unusual event took place in the **Brdy National Park** where a project was launched in 2018 to **restore the aquatic areas** of the park. The implementation was delayed due to the time it took for the authorities to obtain all the necessary permits to **start the construction**.
## The nature of beavers surpasses bureaucracy
Recently, several **Czech environmental organizations** reported that the beavers had naturally built the **dams** that the government had planned to build, allowing the allocated funds to be saved in full.
In addition, these environmental groups revealed that the **beavers’ work** took them only two days, a great irony considering that more than seven years had passed since the Czech government approved the project.
Bohumil Fišer, the director of the Brdy Protected Natural Area Administration, did not hide his total amazement when comparing the **efficiency of the beavers** with the bureaucracy of public administration.
“The Military Forest Administration and the Moldava River Basin negotiated with each other to launch the project and resolve issues related to land ownership. The beavers took the lead and **saved us bureaucracy and money**,” a delighted Fišer stated.
Ecologists indicated that the dams were built in the right places and will help **restore the wetlands** to their natural state, facilitating the **reproduction of local fauna** such as river crabs, frogs, and other animal species.
## Why do beavers build dams?
Beavers are **famous for their engineering skills**. With their sharp teeth and developed instinct, they build elaborate dams and shelters that alter environments. They create wetland habitats that are vital for numerous species of **plants and animals**.
Their dams help retain water in streams and rivers, **mitigating floods** during heavy rains, ensuring a constant water supply during **dry periods**.
The ponds created by beavers and the surrounding wetlands serve as critical points for biodiversity, besides supporting a wide **diversity of wildlife**. These habitats provide food, shelter, and breeding grounds for numerous species such as fish, amphibians, waterfowl, mammals, and many more.
