The team from the Esquel Prosecutor’s Office (Chubut) met with provincial representatives to address environmental crimes linked to illegal fishing, an activity that threatens aquatic ecosystems and the survival of protected species.
The towns of Corcovado and Río Pico have been identified as critical areas, where repeated practices of illegal fishing have been detected, particularly affecting the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis).
Impact of illegal fishing on aquatic ecosystems
During the meeting, the impact of illegal extraction of brook trout was analyzed, which occurs in spawning areas and key moments of the reproductive cycle.
- Risk to the trout population: Indiscriminate fishing for commercial purposes reduces the number of individuals, affecting their sustainability.
- Alteration of the ecosystem: The decrease in species can disrupt aquatic biodiversity.
- Loss of tourist and sports resources: Brook trout is a symbol of sport fishing in Patagonia.
Regulatory and environmental control actions
The meeting, held at the prosecutor’s office headquarters, was attended by key authorities:
- Director of Continental Fisheries, Eng. Pablo M. Buono.
- President of the Chubut Fishing Guides Association, Gerónimo Cantón.
- Legal advisor of the entity, Agustín Hermosilla.
- Prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office, Cecilia Bagnato.
- Environmental Protection Technician, María Inés Vassallo.
The institutions involved conducted an analysis of the registered infractions and emphasized the importance of coordinating efforts against these crimes.
If formal complaints are filed, the Prosecutor’s Office will proceed with the corresponding criminal investigations.
The brook trout: a key species for conservation
The brook trout, although not native to Argentina, has successfully adapted to the cold, oxygenated rivers of Patagonia.
Due to its ecological and touristic value, its regulation is essential to ensure sustainable populations and preserve the balance of the aquatic ecosystem.
Authorities in Chubut implement controls to prevent overfishing and minimize impacts on native species, promoting responsible resource management.
Coordinated action against illegal fishing
The joint work between the Prosecutor’s Office, fishing authorities, and conservation experts strengthens strategies to combat illegal fishing and protect the biodiversity of watercourses in the region.
These measures are essential to guarantee the sustainability of sport fishing, protect aquatic ecosystems, and prevent the extinction of key species in the natural environment of Patagonia.
