La Pampa deploys drones and patrols to curb poaching at the start of the 2026 rutting season

With the start of the rutting season, one of the most emblematic natural and tourist events in La Pampa, the Ministry of Security and Justice launched a special prevention and control operation.

The strategy combines territorial police presence with advanced technological tools to eradicate poaching and protect natural resources.

Highlights include:

  • Drones with thermal vision: capable of detecting heat sources at night or in inaccessible forest areas.
  • Strategic monitoring: long-range devices and tactical cameras that expand surveillance without alerting offenders.
  • Mobile units: permanent patrols on rural and local roads, reinforcing state presence.

Focus on the Luro Park Reserve

The main objective of the operation is to ensure the safety of tourists visiting the Provincial Luro Park Reserve and protect the natural heritage. It aims to deter illegal hunting, prevent damage to perimeter fences, and ensure that tourist activities proceed without criminal interference.

The coordination between the Ministry of Security and Justice, the Secretariat of Environment and Climate Change, and the Secretariat of Tourism ensures a balance between rural production, tourism, and environmental preservation.

rutting season
The rutting season arrives with a special operation: drones and advanced surveillance.

The rutting season: a unique spectacle

The rut is the mating period of the red deer (Cervus elaphus), occurring between mid-March and April. During this time, males emit powerful roars to attract females and fight with their antlers, offering a unique natural spectacle.

  • Animal behavior: males form harems and confront each other to demonstrate their strength.
  • Prominent location: the Luro Park Reserve, famous for its caldén forests, is the main stage.
  • Tourist experience: guided tours at dawn or dusk allow for observing and listening to this phenomenon.
  • Other attractions: the El Castillo Museum and interpretive trails complement the experience.

The red deer, introduced in 1906 by Pedro Luro, is now key to the regional economy:

  • Economic impact: sport hunting and the production of meat, leather, and antlers generate significant income.
  • Game tourism: La Pampa accounts for 40% of national trophies and attracts international hunters.
  • Ecological tourism: the rut has become a highly relevant tourist product.

The fight against poaching

Illegal hunting threatens the biodiversity of La Pampa and affects native species:

  • Guanaco (Lama guanicoe): hunted with greyhounds.
  • Rhea (Rhea pennata): affected by hunting and nest collection.
  • Pampas deer: protected but still vulnerable.
  • Puma: victim of steel traps.
  • Patagonian land tortoise (Chelonoidis donosobarrosi): subject to illegal trade.
  • Maras and native birds: also pursued.

Authorities impose severe fines, confiscate tools, and initiate legal proceedings in serious cases. The goal is to sanction and, above all, protect the natural heritage of La Pampa.

The 2026 rutting season in La Pampa becomes an example of how technology and institutional coordination can reinforce conservation. The operation aims to make this natural spectacle safe for tourists and communities while decisively combating poaching that threatens biodiversity.
