Mexico: Zoo in Culiacán under investigation following the death of a white lion due to malnutrition

The recent death of a white lion at the Culiacán zoo in Mexico has brought to light the alarming conditions of animal abuse at the facility.

The specimen, named “Rey León”, was seen in videos that circulated on social media in a clearly weak state, locked behind rusted bars and without adequate access to food.

The image of the animal sparked outrage and prompted the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) to intervene in the case.

According to local media, reports about the lion’s condition started more than 15 days before its death. However, authorities did not take action until the situation became public.

Profepa initiated an inspection at the zoo, not only confirming the lion’s death but also observing critical conditions in other animals at the facility.

They secured 119 wildlife specimens during the inspection carried out between April 29 and May 1.

Dirty cages, empty water troughs, and unsanitary enclosures were found, indicating a systematic neglect and a lack of basic care for wildlife.

The Culiacán zoo, which was previously considered a model for conservation and environmental education, was pointed out by employees and animal rights defenders as a place where animal welfare was “systematically neglected”.

Several employees reported that the animals lack proper veterinary care and that the facilities do not meet the minimum standards for their care.
