Nahuel Huapi opens a call for volunteers to protect the huillín, the endangered native otter of Patagonia

The Nahuel Huapi National Park has opened a call for volunteers who wish to participate in the Huillín Conservation Project.

These are two volunteer opportunities aimed at students who want to participate in the protection of this emblematic species of Patagonia.

The initiative seeks to add support in field tasks and monitoring of the Lontra provocax, a species in danger of extinction.

Better known as huillín, this native otter finds its only stable freshwater refuge in Argentina in this park.

Interested parties must reside in Bariloche, Dina Huapi, Villa La Angostura, or Villa Traful.

Additionally, they must be pursuing degrees such as Environmental Engineering, Bachelor of Biological Sciences, or Environmental Management.

An opportunity for the conservation of the huillín in Nahuel Huapi

The volunteer program represents a practical experience for those who wish to train in applied research and directly contribute to the conservation of the huillín.

The Nahuel Huapi National Park safeguards the only stable and permanent freshwater population of this species in Argentina.

Therefore, this project is a crucial effort for its survival.

Joining this initiative involves actively participating in efforts to improve its conservation status and generate scientific knowledge about its behavior and habitat.

The importance of the conservation of the huillín

The huillín is considered an emblematic species of the Nahuel Huapi National Park and is nationally endangered.

Its presence is an indicator of the health of Patagonian aquatic ecosystems, as it requires clean waters and undisturbed environments.

The conservation of the huillín not only protects this native otter but also contributes to preserving the biodiversity and waterways of the region.

This project represents a unique opportunity for young professionals to contribute to science and the protection of an irreplaceable species of Argentine fauna.
