Residents of Mar del Plata promote a facility for rescued stray animals and a public veterinary hospital

Vecinos de Mar del Plata launched a petition on Change.org to enable a site for street animals that have been rescued.

The proposal aims to ease the task of rescuers and offer a temporary space where animals can recover until finding a permanent family.

The initiative, created a week ago, already has more than 200 virtual supports and also highlights the need for a public veterinary hospital to ensure free medical care.

Project Foundations

  • Temporary shelter: receive rescued animals and ensure their well-being until adoption.
  • Public veterinary hospital: provide medical care at no cost.
  • Support for rescuers: reduce the financial burden on NGOs and individuals, who face high costs for food, boarding, and veterinary treatments.
  • Social awareness: promote responsibility towards animals and community collaboration.

The creator of the petition emphasizes that the effort of rescuers is commendable, but not sustainable if all responsibility falls on them. With an official site, the community could ensure a more efficient animal health and welfare system.

The Animal Crisis in Mar del Plata

The city faces a severe overpopulation of street animals:

  • Estimated population: between 50,000 and 60,000 homeless dogs.
  • Uncontrolled reproduction: a dog and its offspring can produce more than 5,000 puppies in seven years.
  • Formation of packs: some groups cause attacks and accidents in public areas.
  • Limited adoption: preference is given to puppies or specific breeds, leaving adult and mixed-breed dogs without opportunities.
  • Lack of temporary homes: there is a shortage of neighbors willing to provide temporary spaces.

A citizen petition seeks to enable a site for animals in transit and create a public veterinary hospital in Mar del Plata.

Proposed Solutions

Local protectionists argue that the only proven solution is massive castration, free and sustained over time, accompanied by responsible adoption programs and community support.

The temporary site would be a key complement to better organize rescues and ensure that animals receive proper care while waiting for a home.

Ways to Collaborate

  • Zoonosis Mar del Plata: castration, vaccination, and responsible adoption of rescued animals.
  • Temporary homes: organizations like Hogar Peludo MDP and Patitas MDP need temporary spaces for animals in recovery.
  • Responsible adoption: register as a temporary home on the official municipal website, which provides food and medical care.
  • Citizen participation: sign the online petition and spread it to gather support.

The proposal to open a site for rescued animals in Mar del Plata reflects the urgency of addressing a crisis affecting thousands of street dogs.

With citizen support and coordination between NGOs, neighbors, and authorities, the city could move towards a more efficient animal welfare system, combining temporary shelters, a public veterinary hospital, and massive castration programs.
