The BioAndina Foundation and Eco Parque from Buenos Aires carried out the first contact with more than 75 census takers in the historic first Andean condor census in the province of San Luis.

The main speakers were Luis Jacome and Vanesa Astore from the Andean Condor Conservation Program, which works alongside dozens of governmental and non-governmental organizations for the rehabilitation, monitoring, and care of the species in the federal territory and a large part of South America.

The workshop by the BioAndina Foundation provided information and images to distinguish ages and sex; a survey was conducted on the methodology, and the description of characteristics.

“We are proud of the turnout and everything we can accomplish together, with all the organizations that joined forces so that San Luis can have its first simultaneous Andean condor census,” expressed the deputy director of Protected Natural Areas and Provincial Parks, Giuliana Torti.

Participating Organizations and the Importance of the Census

Local and federal environmental organizations are preparing for an extensive sighting task scheduled for June 7. Among the local participants, two birdwatching clubs will take part: COA Chiguanco from Villa de Merlo and COA Ñandú from Villa Mercedes; the private protected natural areas ‘La Siempre Viva’, ‘Don Félix y Sacha Juan’, ‘Piedra del Agua’, and ‘Quebrada del Palmar’; the San Luis Andean Club; the San Francisco Mountain Club and the Puntano Sport Climbing Club. From the federal sphere, the organizations Aves Argentinas, Eco Parque from Buenos Aires, Árbol del Sur, and the Argentine Mountaineering Federation will also be accompanying this mission.

Through this census, it is possible to learn about the status of the natural populations of this threatened species in all regions of the province, monitor their dynamics, and evaluate their use of the environment, as well as determine if they are threatened by human actions.
