San Luis: The private reserve Piedra del Agua became Andean Condor Sanctuary

The **Andean Condor Conservation Program (PCCA)** has celebrated the inclusion of a **Private Protected Natural Area** near **La Carolina, San Luis**, a key territory for the **feeding and flight of Andean condors** in the central mountains.

Just a few months ago, a group of **over 30 condors** was recorded feeding on carrion in a **high-altitude grassland** in the province, a phenomenon rarely documented and of great relevance for the **species conservation** ([source](https://noticiasambientales.com/animales/condor-andino-record-de-avistamientos-en-mendoza-en-el-18-censo-simultaneo/)).

Conservation and production in the same space

The protected area, covering 2700 hectares, belongs to **Raymond Florin and Lilian Brodtmann**, who have dedicated over 600 hectares to **conservation compatible with livestock production** through **holistic management** and **rotational grazing**.

This reserve is part of the **Wildlife Refuge Network of the [Wildlife Foundation Argentina](https://www.vidasilvestre.org.ar/)**, the **Grassland Alliance**, and the **SARA program of Ruuts carbon credits**.

Ecological impact and grassland regeneration

The **high-altitude grassland**, located **1600 meters above sea level**, contributes to the conservation of:
– **Natural habitats** for insects and birds.
– **Deep root systems** that favor soil regeneration.
– **Greater biodiversity and CO₂ storage**, minimizing environmental impact.

The **trampling and manure of livestock** in the grazing cycle have shown **significant improvements in the [ecosystem recovery](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bahia-de-florida-restaurar-los-everglades-para-salvar-el-ecosistema/)**.

Incorporation into the System of Protected Natural Areas

On **February 13, 2025**, the reserve became the **fourth private protected natural area** within the **San Luis Protected Natural Areas System (SAMP)**, created by **Provincial Law No. IX-0309-2004**.

Other spaces recently added include:
– **Don Félix and Sacha Juan (Villa de Merlo)**.
– **La Siempre Viva (Chipiscú)**.
– **Quebrada del Palmar (San Francisco del Monte de Oro)**.

The role of the private sector in Andean condor conservation

The provincial government seeks to **strengthen environmental conservation** in the private sector, emphasizing the importance of:
– Protecting biodiversity and natural resources.
– Preserving watersheds and soils.
– Regulating the climate and reducing carbon emissions.
– Promoting scientific research and environmental training.

Each new protected area represents a **key commitment to sustainability**, demonstrating that **conservation and production can coexist**.
