The Pampas Meadowlark needs us: how the campaign to save this emblematic species from extinction is going

Nature is unique, and each of its members is too. However, many species are in grave danger of extinction, such as the Pampas Meadowlark (Leistes defilippii), one of the most emblematic of the pampas grasslands, which urgently needs community help to survive.

For this reason, different environmental organizations launched a campaign in September 2025 to raise funds to support the conservation work that the team is doing in the southwest of the province of Buenos Aires.

In this region of the country, between 1460 and 2057 mature individuals survive, divided into small fragmented populations. This is a consequence of agricultural expansion, urbanization, and intensive livestock farming, which have destroyed much of this species’ habitat.

While the work of experts is essential for the conservation of this bird, donations are also crucial as they help finance materials for nest protection, sample collection kits, bird banding, and monitoring equipment.

A bird with unique characteristics

The Pampas Meadowlark is a bird that belongs to the Icteridae family, measuring about 19 cm in length, with a dark brownish-black plumage with light streaks on the back, while from the throat to the abdomen it is scarlet red in males and a duller color in females.

But its characteristics are not the only properties that make it unique, but also its ecological role, as it acts as a bioindicator of the health of temperate grasslands, one of the most threatened ecosystems in South America.

In this regard, the Pampas Meadowlark Project becomes essential to preserve this species. The initiative, besides contributing to conservation, also aims to conduct various studies that will allow updating and gathering more knowledge about the biology and population dynamics of this bird.

This will allow them to collect essential information to improve the management plan and diagnose the state of the habitat and its changes.

Declared “endangered”

As a result of habitat loss and degradation, coupled with nest predation and improper crop spraying, the species was categorized as “endangered” (Resolution SAyDS 348/2010) at the national level, (AA/AOP & SAyDS, 2008) and internationally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

For this reason, the species is protected by the National Wildlife Conservation Law 22.421, its regulatory decree 666/97, and national and provincial resolutions.
