Fishermen from Coronda caught a huge specimen of stingray in the waters of the Coronda River.
The event drew attention due to the recent appearance of another similar specimen on March 7.
Fishermen and capture procedure
The task was carried out by fisherman Juan Benegas along with other river workers, who managed to extract the animal with a diameter of over one meter and a weight exceeding 100 kilograms. The specimen was transported to the city’s coastline, at the southern zone supervisory port.
Given the frequency with which large stingrays have been captured, biologists from Paraná will head to the area to conduct studies on their characteristics and biological conditions.
Preservation of the Capture Site
The Coronda Native Community, to which the Benegas family belongs, reported the capture and decided not to disclose the exact location of the discovery in order to prevent predation attempts in the area.
This new event reinforces the scientific interest in the habitat of the Coronda River, generating expectations about the results of the analysis of these specimens.
The recent precedent of capturing a stingray in Coronda
On March 7, Benegas caught a specimen of stingray weighing around 60 kilograms and a little over a meter tall.
The tool used to trap this fish was a rayero, an artisanal device consisting of a large drum, a rope of several meters, and a large hook with bait made of water snakes.
The capture of this large animal took place in the central area of Las Tejas, in the island area of the Coronda River, several kilometers from the coast.
