They will create the first land turtle rescue center in Córdoba for species conservation

The project, backed by the Franz Weber Foundation, seeks to combat illegal trafficking and rehabilitate the specimens in their natural habitat to curb the danger of extinction by creating the first turtle rescue center.

In an effort to mitigate the impact of the clandestine trade of wildlife, the creation of the first turtle rescue center in Córdoba was announced, a pioneering initiative dedicated exclusively to the protection and rehabilitation of this species.

The project arises as an urgent response to the critical situation of these reptiles, considered among the animals most affected by illegal trafficking in Argentina and currently categorized as endangered.

The mission of this new space is to ensure a comprehensive approach to the welfare of the rescued specimens.

To this end, the center will have a multidisciplinary team composed of biologists, veterinary doctors, and technical staff.

This group of experts will work in a coordinated manner to implement responsible recovery protocols that allow, as much as possible, to reintegrate the individuals into their natural environment.

Where the turtle rescue center will be located

One of the strategic advantages of the project is its location. The facility will be established within the historical geographical distribution area of the species.

This technical decision is not random: the climatic and environmental conditions of the sector are fundamental to ensure that the rehabilitation process is effective and respectful of the reptiles’ biology.

The turtle rescue center will operate with a protocol

It is important to note that the turtle rescue center in Córdoba will not operate as an open reception shelter.

Under a scheme of responsible rescue, the center will only receive specimens referred by the competent authorities that have been seized from illegal trafficking.

Since the capacity of the facilities is limited, the focus will be on the quality of treatment and biological conservation.

This initiative, strictly non-profit, has the international support of the Franz Weber Foundation.

With this step, Argentina seeks to reinforce the message that turtles, being wild animals, should not be considered pets, thus promoting a necessary change in awareness for the survival of the species.
