A study led by the Harvard Medical School revealed a fact as endearing as surprising: dogs dream about their daily experiences, and many times, those dream scenes include their owners. The research was spearheaded by Dr. Deirdre Barrett, an expert in human sleep behavior who applied her knowledge to the animal world.
“There is no reason to think that animals are different from us. Given the strong emotional bond they have with people, it is very likely that dogs dream about the face, smell, and interactions with their owners,” explained Barrett.
According to the research, dog sleep cycles are similar to humans, with stages that include REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, which is when dreams usually occur. During this phase, signs such as leg spasms, nose twitches, or soft barks can be observed: indications that the animal is dreaming.
Barrett suggests that during these moments, dogs likely relive experiences such as playtime, walks, cuddles, or exciting situations from their day.

Keys to a Good Rest for Pets
The doctor also shared a recommendation to improve the quality of dogs’ sleep: “The best way to promote pleasant dreams is to offer them positive experiences during the day and provide them with a safe, comfortable, and quiet resting space.”
Caring for a dog’s emotional well-being not only enhances their behavior during wakefulness but also the quality of rest they can have at the end of the day.
Studies have shown that dogs can live longer if they sleep with their owners.
The Simple Trick that Helps Reduce Anxiety in Dogs
Many dog owners consider their pets as part of the family and constantly seek ways to improve their quality of life. However, just like humans, dogs can also experience anxiety and stress, which can manifest in restless or destructive behaviors. While there are various strategies to help animals relax, a surprisingly effective method caught the attention of experts: reading aloud to them.
The British charity Dogs Trust shared a video where several volunteers read stories aloud to shelter dogs. The results were surprising: many of the animals calmed down and even fell asleep upon hearing a human voice. This simple gesture creates an environment of safety and tranquility, helping dogs relax and feel more confident.
According to Terry Cuyler, a dog trainer at Pawsitive Results, this method works because dogs are very sensitive to tones of voice. Hearing a calm and soothing voice sends them signals of safety and well-being. “When you read to your dog, your voice becomes a signal for relaxation,” explains the expert.
