San Juan inaugurates the country’s first solar highway and consolidates a new model of sustainable road infrastructure

San Juan took a historic step by launching Argentina’s first solar highway. The project integrates photovoltaic generation into the road system, combining mobility and clean energy.

The project is located on the Avenida Circunvalación, one of the most traveled arteries. There, the road infrastructure ceases to be just transit and becomes an energy source.

This initiative places the province at the forefront of regional sustainable engineering. It also reaffirms its leadership in renewable energies at the national level.

How the San Juan solar highway works

The highway features 36 individual photovoltaic systems mounted on metal monopoles. Each structure captures solar energy and transforms it into electricity for urban use.

During the day, the panels inject energy into the general electrical grid. At night, the system returns that energy to illuminate the road path.

The applied technology optimizes existing resources without occupying new land. Thus, the infrastructure serves a dual function with less environmental impact.

Local innovation with global projection

The development was carried out entirely with local labor and technical capacity. Engineers, technicians, and suppliers from the province participated in all stages.

The project required specific solutions for a seismic and high-traffic area. The technical challenge was resolved with planning, safety, and specialized logistics.

With this project, San Juan joins cutting-edge international experiences. Renewable energy becomes a structural part of the urban landscape.

Benefits of solar energy applied to roads and cities

Solar energy reduces emissions and decreases dependence on fossil sources. Each kilowatt generated prevents the release of greenhouse gases.

It also implies economic savings in the long term in lighting and maintenance. The electrical grid becomes more efficient and resilient.

Moreover, it promotes intelligent use of existing public space. The road becomes an ally of the energy transition.

Sustainable development with social and environmental impact

The solar highway demonstrates that infrastructure can be part of the climate solution. It integrates innovation, energy efficiency, and reduction of the environmental impact.

The project strengthens local employment and regional technical knowledge. Sustainability thus becomes a driver of economic development.

San Juan sets a replicable path for other provinces. Clean energy, when integrated into the territory, redefines the urban future.
