A comprehensive operation stopped the fire in Los Glaciares National Park and strengthens environmental and human protection

On the morning of Sunday, January 4th, a fire was detected in the Northern Zone of Los Glaciares National Park, prompting the teams from the National Parks Administration to activate an immediate operation, prioritizing the conservation of the environment and the safety of people.

The fire was located near the Vuelta al Huemul circuit. Consequently, the risk to hikers and staff was assessed. As a preventive measure, control and restriction measures were taken.

This sector is of difficult access and high ecological value. Therefore, the response had to be quick and coordinated. In this way, a greater spread of the fire was avoided.

Evacuations and visitor protection

As firefighting tasks progressed, a preventive evacuation was ordered. Thus, 40 people were relocated from Bahía de los Témpanos. The operation was carried out without incidents and under safety protocols.

At the same time, the Vuelta al Huemul circuit was suspended. This decision aimed to reduce risks in a remote and exposed area. Therefore, communication with visitors and guides was reinforced.

Additionally, the El Chaltén Rescue Commission actively collaborated. In this way, tours and information points were organized. Thus, an orderly control of the affected area was ensured.

Firefighters, aerial means, and network work

In the field, 22 specialized firefighters are operating. They belong to National Parks and the Provincial Agrarian Council. They also have water equipment and manual tools.

As aerial support, a water bomber plane from the Federal Emergency Agency was added. Additionally, an observation aircraft was incorporated for constant monitoring. In this way, real-time decision-making is optimized.

Private sector actors are also participating. For example, boats from Lake Viedma transport personnel and supplies. Thus, logistics adapt to the park’s conditions.

Environmental protection as a strategic priority

The approach to the fire is inter-institutional and preventive. On one hand, it seeks to contain the fire quickly. On the other, it protects a high natural value ecosystem.

Los Glaciares harbors sensitive biodiversity to the impact of fire. Therefore, every action aims to minimize environmental damage. Consequently, landscapes, soils, and fauna are safeguarded.

Likewise, the operation takes care of tourist staff and visitors. In this way, activity is preserved without compromising safety. Thus, conservation and responsible use advance together.

Benefits of a coordinated emergency response

This type of operation strengthens the environmental management of the park. By acting early, long-term impacts are reduced. Additionally, the natural heritage is protected for future generations.

It also improves safety in nature tourism areas. Thanks to coordination, evacuations are orderly and effective. Therefore, the confidence of visitors and workers is reinforced.

Finally, the articulation between public and private sectors is key. This model allows for faster and more efficient responses. Thus, environmental protection becomes a collective task.
