Hand in hand with the team from the Environment Department of Villa Carlos Paz, they reforest with native species the shores of Lake San Roque, Córdoba.

15 native willow trees and sen del campo were planted, two native species that adapt to coastal areas. Volunteers also joined the day.

Another key point is that the plants were produced in the municipal nursery of native species, from cuttings and seeds from the area.

Work crews and volunteers worked in the Bay of the Gypsy area. “These restoration actions favor urban biodiversity and provide shade and oxygen to our green spaces, improving the quality of life of the residents of Villa Carlos Paz,” the authorities stated.

These activities are carried out within the framework of the Municipal Reforestation Program and will continue in different public spaces in the city.

“The idea is that residents can join as volunteers, either to plant or take care of these little trees, which improve the quality of life in the city,” added the Secretary of Urban Community Development and Environmental Management, Carla Livelli.

Why reforesting with native species is crucial

Reforestation with native species is very important because it helps conserve biodiversity, restore ecosystem structure, and, fundamentally, mitigate climate change.

In this regard, it is crucial to educate communities about the importance of native species and their roles in the ecosystem.

Many times, even though the intention is to help the environment, exotic species are chosen, which have harmful consequences. Native species are perfectly adapted to local soil conditions and climate, reducing the need for watering, fertilizers, and pesticides.

This makes them more resistant to pests and diseases, ensuring healthy growth with less human intervention. Additionally, they protect and restore essential habitats for local fauna.

Furthermore, they are part of the natural and cultural heritage of each region. Their presence not only preserves the original landscapes but also contributes to the conservation of ancestral knowledge about their use and benefits.
