Soon, the town of Puerto Madryn, Chubut, will have an agency specialized in environmental crimes.
It will operate within the scope of the Prosecutor’s Office, dedicated to investigating crimes that affect the environment and animals.
Environmental crimes agency: Madryn’s progress
The initiative was promoted by Chief Prosecutor Alex Williams, in compliance with Resolution 244/24 PG, and issued by the General Prosecution.
It establishes the creation of agencies for Environment, Offenses, and Crimes against Animals throughout the province.
Wildlife trafficking is one of the most common environmental crimes.
It is part of the operation of the Specialized Fiscal Unit in Environment and Crimes against Animals (UFE AyDA), based in Rawson. The aim is to strengthen the approach to these issues from a comprehensive perspective and with trained staff.
Prosecutors Cecilia Pistará and Florencia Bianchi will be in charge of this new unit in Puerto Madryn, which will aim to ensure more efficient responses to complaints related to these issues.
The importance of having specialized agencies
Environmental prosecutors, as well as specialized agencies or organizations in this type of crimes, are very important.
They contribute to protecting public health and preserving natural resources. Having the expertise and appropriate training also allows us to understand the criminal acts that threaten flora and fauna.
When we talk about a crime, it implies an act or behavior expressly established and penalized by law, at a specific time and place.
In Argentina, environmental crimes cover a wide range of behaviors ranging from water resource pollution to deforestation and illegal wildlife trafficking. Some of the most common include:
- Environmental pollution: The illegal discharge of toxic substances into rivers and lakes, affecting biodiversity and human health.
- Deforestation: the indiscriminate felling of forests, especially in protected areas.
- Illegal wildlife trafficking: the capture and illegal trade of endangered species.
- Illegal exploitation of natural resources: unauthorized extraction of mineral and forest resources.
These crimes not only have a direct impact on the environment, but also affect local communities that depend on these resources for their livelihood.
