Measure to Conserve: How Forests Ensure Environmental and Social Balance in Colombia

For the third consecutive year, Colombia reports a reduction in deforestation, a key achievement for a country where more than 50% of the territory is covered by forests. This progress reinforces the need to strengthen mechanisms that ensure the sustainability of the so-called ecosystem services, essential for life, human well-being, and the environmental balance.

Forests and protected natural areas are much more than green landscapes: they provide water, purify the air, store carbon, and regulate the climate. Their role is vital for the ecological balance and for sustaining local economies that depend on natural resources. However, protecting them is no longer enough; it is necessary to demonstrate with evidence how their conservation positively impacts the planet.

In this sense, measuring the impact of ecosystem services becomes an indispensable tool. It allows evaluating, communicating, and strengthening trust among companies, communities, and governments, transparently showing the benefits of responsible forest management.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) developed the tool “FSC Verified Impact”, which facilitates this task through measurable indicators on biodiversity, clean water, healthy soils, and carbon storage. With it, the aim is to ensure that sustainable forest management is also verifiable and accessible to all involved parties.

The role of forests in environmental balance

Forests are one of the planet’s greatest allies against climate change. They act as natural lungs, capturing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Additionally, they regulate rainfall, protect soils from erosion, and conserve sources of essential freshwater for agriculture and human consumption.

In Colombia, where forest ecosystems cover more than half of the territory, their role is even more decisive. These areas support the richest biodiversity in South America and are home to thousands of communities that directly depend on their resources.

However, forests are also among the most threatened ecosystems. Agricultural expansion, illegal mining, and uncontrolled logging continue to exert pressure on them. Therefore, initiatives like “FSC Verified Impact” represent a concrete opportunity to reverse environmental degradation and demonstrate, with data, that conservation generates social, economic, and ecological value.

Latin America bets on measuring impact

In the region, there are more than 96 projects certified under the FSC Verified Impact scheme, covering more than 3.5 million hectares. Half of these are located in Latin America, one of the areas with the greatest biological wealth on the planet. These projects have proven that sustainable forest management can coexist with environmental conservation and local development.

However, challenges remain. Public policies, regulatory frameworks, and economic incentives must advance at the same pace as private initiatives. Without a solid governance system, conservation efforts risk being insufficient in the face of the magnitude of the climate crisis.

Cooperation between governments, companies, and local communities will be key to multiplying results. Measuring the benefits provided by forests is not just a technical issue but an ethical and strategic decision to ensure a sustainable future. Forests are not an infinite resource: they are the foundation upon which life is built.
