Spain, astronomical epicenter: three solar eclipses in 532 days and the Perseid meteor shower in August 2027

Spain is preparing to become the epicenter of world astronomical observation with the arrival of a unique series of three solar eclipses. During a period of only 532 days, the Iberian country will witness these celestial phenomena unmatched in Europe this century.

Eclipses in Spain: A Historic Streak

The start of this spectacular trilogy will be on August 12 with a total solar eclipse that will mark a milestone by crossing the north of the Iberian Peninsula. This event will begin in Galicia, move through León, Burgos, and Palencia and conclude in the Baleares Islands. It will be the first umbral shadow of the Moon in Europe since 1999.

The phenomenon promises to be unforgettable, as the Sun will be very close to the horizon at sunset, offering the possibility of capturing impressive images. Even a small region in the northeast of Portugal, near the Montesinho Natural Park, will experience a brief phase of totality.

The same night, between August 12 and 13, the sky will offer another spectacle: the Perseids meteor shower will reach its peak, benefited by the darkness of the new Moon, guaranteeing a dazzling view of shooting stars.

Less than a year later, on August 2, 2027, a new total eclipse will take place, this time in the south of Spain. Cities like Cádiz, Málaga, and Tarifa will be privileged with the totality of the event, which will continue its path through North Africa to the Middle East, reaching its maximum duration near Luxor, Egypt.

Finally, on January 26, 2028, the cycle culminates with an annular eclipse. During this event, the Moon will be far enough from Earth not to completely cover the Sun, creating the spectacular “ring of fire” visible from the south of the country.

This series of eclipses not only positions Spain as a crucial destination for astronomy enthusiasts but also highlights the beauty of nature and science in the same setting. Sky enthusiasts will not want to miss the opportunity to observe these rare events.
