Renewable energies in Ireland: in February they covered more than half of the electricity demand.

Renewable energies in Ireland covered more than half of the country’s energy demand in February. This is indicated by the provisional data from the grid operator EirGrid.

The main provider was wind energy, which satisfied almost half of the electricity needs. This represents a little over 48% of all the energy used.

The country’s goal is for 80% of electricity to come from these sources, for which it has undertaken a strong transition.

### Renewable energies in Ireland: the advances shown in February
The total wind energy generation in Ireland amounted to 1411 GWh (gigawatt-hours) during the month, reaching a new wind energy record on Thursday, February 13.

But renewables in general provided 54.5% of the electricity in February, including grid-scale solar and hydroelectric energy. The overall demand of the electricity system was 2918 GWh.

On the other hand, gas generation accounted for 31% of all electricity used in February, 12% of which was imported through interconnection. 2% came from coal, and the remaining 1% from other sources.

### The energy transition
The company EirGrid is responsible for leading Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon future so that 80% of the electricity can come from renewable energies, as set out in the Government’s objectives.

Currently, the electricity grid can accommodate up to 75% of electricity from renewable sources at any given time. This is known as the non-synchronous system penetration limit (SNSP). The goal now is to increase that limit even further.

“February was one of our strongest months on record in terms of renewable energies on the grid, as demonstrated by the new record of maximum wind energy of 3884 megawatts on the afternoon of February 13,” confirmed Charlie McGee, EirGrid’s operational system manager.

“As always, this was supported by a combination of generation sources that help ensure a stable energy flow on the grid at all times,” he added.

### Renewables in South America: what is happening in the region

South America has great potential for generation, and these countries lead in renewable energies thanks to their abundant natural resources such as sun, wind, and water.

Many countries in the region have made significant progress in adopting these sources of clean energy, thus contributing to the fight against climate change and the diversification of their energy matrix.
