“Super Niño” in Argentina: alerts for severe storms and extreme cold in Litoral, Cuyo, and Patagonia

The Argentine Republic is facing a complex meteorological scenario due to the advance of the Super Niño. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued yellow, orange, and red level alerts, which will impact the Litoral and the Northeast with severe storms, in Cuyo and the Central mountain range with zonda winds and heavy snowfalls, and in Patagonia and the center of the country with extreme cold.

This phenomenon, when colliding with polar air masses, intensifies two crucial currents in the Southern Cone: a subtropical jet stream at altitude and an atmospheric river that transports moisture from the Amazon to the Plata basin.

Impact of the “Super Niño” in the AMBA and other regions

For the area of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and its surroundings, the “Super Niño” will imply a period of high humidity and prolonged instability. Specialists have pointed out how this phenomenon enhances atmospheric currents, leading to severe storms.

Climatology specialist Christian Garavaglia explained in Meteored that El Niño alters atmospheric circulation in South America, strengthening the subtropical jet stream. It also increases the frequency of the low-level jet stream, which transports heat and humidity from the northern Amazon to Argentina.

The regions affected by this phenomenon are not limited to the AMBA. In the Río de la Plata basin, the threat of sudestadas is significant, with southeast winds that can cause flooding and surges.

The SMN has emphasized that the combination of warm and humid air with colder flows from the south creates optimal conditions for the formation of severe storms. This situation is particularly concerning for the populations of the Litoral and the Northeast, where heavy rains are more likely.

In summary, although the “Super Niño” originates thousands of kilometers away, its effects are strongly felt in Argentina. The alterations in rainfall, temperature, and wind patterns are a reminder of how global phenomena can have local impacts.
