Yellow alert for heat in 8 provinces: SMN warns of temperatures up to 37 degrees

The SMN issued a yellow heat alert, the weather warning extends from the metropolitan area to the center and north of Argentina, with moderate health risks for the most vulnerable sectors.

The meteorological watch for yellow heat alert in 8 Argentine provinces has been made official this Sunday following the latest report from the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

What initially appeared to be a localized phenomenon in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) has evolved into a national scope warning, moving towards various regions in the center and north of the country, where the thermometer is expected to reach critical peaks of 37°C.

The map of affected areas

The technical body has expanded the coverage area due to the persistent rise in temperature levels.

The jurisdictions currently under climate watch include Santa Fe, Córdoba, and the southern sector of Entre Ríos in the central zone. Towards the Cuyo region, the warning impacts the east of Mendoza and a large part of the territory of San Luis.

Meanwhile, in the north, the province of Misiones has also been included in the report, while in the Pampas region, the northern sector of La Pampa will be affected by the warm air.

Extreme thermal records and feeling of suffocation

According to specialists’ projections, the hottest points will be located in Mendoza and La Pampa, where maximums are expected to reach 37 degrees.

In San Luis, although the mercury would position itself at 35°C, the situation will be aggravated by the probability of isolated storms that will increase humidity levels, significantly raising the thermal sensation.

Meanwhile, in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and the Conurbano, relief conditions will be null during the day: a maximum of 32°C and a minimum that will not drop below 23°C are estimated, maintaining the hot environment constantly.

Recommendations in the face of health risk

The SMN reminded that a yellow level alert implies that extreme temperatures can have a mild to moderate effect on the health of the general population, but pose a greater danger to risk groups such as children and adults over 65 years old.

To prevent dehydration or heat stroke, health authorities recommend:

  • Constant hydration: Drink water frequently without waiting to feel thirsty.

  • Light meals: Prioritize the intake of fruits and vegetables, avoiding heavy or copious meals.

  • Appropriate clothing: Wear light-colored clothing made of lightweight, loose-fitting materials.

  • Time restrictions: Do not engage in intense physical activities or expose yourself to the sun between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Additionally, the community is urged to pay special attention to symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, severe headache, or confusion.

In the persistence of these signs, it is vital to seek cool environments, hydrate the skin, and go to the nearest health center immediately.
