Algae packaging: eliminating plastic without a trace

In a world saturated with plastic waste, the British startup Notpla has developed an innovative solution: biodegradable packaging made from seaweed, which naturally degrades in a few weeks, even in marine environments.

The raw material used, brown algae, grows without the need for arable land, fertilizers, or freshwater, in addition to capturing CO₂ and reducing water acidity, making it a regenerative and ecological resource.

A revolutionary material

Unlike conventional bioplastics, Notpla packaging is made from brown algae, a regenerative resource that:

  • Does not require arable land, fertilizers, or freshwater.
  • Captures CO₂ and reduces water acidity, benefiting the environment.
  • Decomposes naturally, without the need for industrial processing.

This technology transforms the concept of packaging, opting for ecological and functional materials.

Solutions applied in different sectors

Notpla has developed biodegradable products in multiple industries:

  • Ooho! Edible hydration: consumable water capsules used in sports events as an alternative to plastic bottles.
  • Food packaging coatings: trays coated with algae film, 100% compostable and recyclable.
  • Soluble films and bags: designed for cosmetics and detergents, disappear after use without generating waste.
  • Pipettes and capsules for oils and supplements: practical for the gastronomic and sports sector.
  • Notpla Paper: plastic-free paper, suitable for sustainable labels and packaging.

Environmental impact and recognitions

The company has been awarded the Earthshot Prize, highlighting its contribution to global sustainability.

By replacing conventional plastics with biomaterials, Notpla reduces its carbon footprint, drives circular models, and strengthens ecosystem regeneration.

Towards a plastic-free future

Notpla demonstrates that innovation can transform entire industries. Its focus on regenerative biomaterials is a viable solution for sectors such as food, personal care, and cleaning, offering functional, biodegradable, and pollution-free packaging.

The packaging revolution is already underway, and Notpla is leading the way towards a more sustainable and plastic-free world.
