Green Innovation: Wind Turbines Reused as Small Houses

Most read

In the Netherlands, companies Vattenfall and Superuse are exploring innovative solutions to reuse parts of wind turbines, a key technology in generating renewable energy facing a serious recycling issue.

Currently, many parts of dismantled turbines end up in landfills due to the difficulty of recycling their enormous blades and metal components.

Housing Prototype with Turbine Nacelle

Instead of discarding these components, Vattenfall and Superuse have developed a housing prototype by reusing the nacelle of a retired wind turbine. This structure, known as the upper casing of the turbine, has been transformed into a compact house of approximately 36 square meters.

The model includes a living space, bathroom, kitchen, solar energy system, and a heat pump, demonstrating the potential of these industrial materials for a second useful life.

Circular Economy of Wind Turbines

This proposal was recently showcased at the Dutch Design Week, standing out for its sustainable and functional approach. In addition to housing, the Superuse and Vattenfall team explores other applications for disused wind turbine parts, such as turning the blades into floating islands for various purposes like solar parks, play areas, and housing.

A turbine blade was modified to float and equipped with a living space and artificial turf, showcasing the potential of these “islands” as multifunctional platforms in water areas.

Reducing Environmental Impact

The design of these structures focuses on minimizing additional processing to reduce environmental impact, a principle that could inspire other industrial sectors to improve their recycling and reuse practices.

With around 10,000 V80 nacelles in operation worldwide, it is expected that many will be retired in the coming years and reused in sustainability projects.

Challenges and Opportunities

Although effective for nacelles and blades, this solution does not address all challenges of turbine recycling, as elements like batteries and rare earth materials still require new recycling techniques.

Initiatives like these transform the image of dismantled wind turbines as waste, turning them into an opportunity to develop sustainable products and support the circular economy in renewable energies.
