Innovation at Finca La Esperanza: Sustainable Irrigation with Solar Energy

Most read

Palm oil production in the Northern Zone (Colombia) faces great challenges for irrigation due to the scarcity of water, essential for the sustainable productivity of the crop.

An analysis on 51,000 hectares reveals that 56% of producers use flood irrigation, 18% furrow irrigation, 17% pressurized systems, and 9% have no access to irrigation. Faced with this reality, palm oil growers have explored innovative alternatives to optimize water use.

Solar Energy Innovation

Since 2014, Carmen Arce and Edgar Díaz, owners of Finca La Esperanza, have implemented a sustainable photovoltaic system for high-flow drip irrigation on their 7.5-hectare crop. This system meets water needs through a deep well, a 2 HP electric pump, and micro-hoses, providing an average flow of 110 liters per palm tree per day.

The use of solar energy eliminates the need for diesel motor pumps, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the quality of life of workers and local communities.

Challenges and Achievements

Carmen Arce’s family faced significant challenges, from equipment theft to a trial-and-error process in selecting technologies. However, their perseverance has transformed the farm into a reference in the use of solar energy for irrigation, inspiring other small producers. La Esperanza’s productivity increased from 16.3 tons per hectare in 2018 to 27.7 tons in 2023.

Sustainable Practices and Recognition

Finca La Esperanza has adopted sustainable practices such as nutrient recycling, planting leguminous cover crops, understory management, and the use of rain gauges and evapotranspiration sensors.

These actions have optimized the water use and ensured long-term sustainability. In 2023, La Esperanza received the Sustainable Palm Oil certification from Colombia (APSColombia), reaffirming its commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

La Esperanza’s experience demonstrates that, even under adverse conditions, technological innovation and the adoption of sustainable practices not only benefit the productivity and profitability of the crop, but also promote community well-being and protect the environment.
