In recent days, environmental organizations in Mendoza are demanding the release of two activists: they claim they are imprisoned for defending water.
These activists are Mauricio Cornejo and Federico Soria, who were arrested after participating in a protest against the San Jorge mining project, which the provincial government is seeking to reactivate in Uspallata.

The NGOs’ demand
Now, around 160 organizations have denounced “the harassment and persecution of those who defend the territory against the advance of large-scale extractive metallic mining in Mendoza and throughout the country.”
In a statement released in the last hours, they demand the release of the two detainees, the resignation of authorities, and the “compliance with the Constitution.”

“This time, the State, Minera San Jorge of Solway Holding, and the Mining Suppliers Chamber criminalize those who resist looting and defend water, the environment, and life,” the text states.
“We know that intimidation strategies seek to sow fear to prevent communities from organizing and actively participating in resistance to productive models that go against their way of life,” it adds.
“Governments identify certain people they consider to hold leadership roles to later persecute, stigmatize, discredit, and judicialize them with the aim of generating fear and demobilization,” the organizations accuse.
They also pointed out that “the fight to defend water is carried out by disseminating scientific information and detailed knowledge of the territory that the driving governments of extractivism do not want to be known.”
“Extractive models are always imposed with violence, with the judicialization of protests and the stigmatization of those who participate in them being a serious violation of fundamental rights to freedom of expression, participation, and organization,” they added.
In that sense, they specified a series of specific demands, including the dropping of charges against the two detainees, up to the “resignation of the Governor of Mendoza, Alfredo Cornejo, the Vice Governor of Mendoza, Hebe Casado, the Minister of Energy and Environment, Jimena Latorre, the president of Impulsa Mendoza, Emilio Guiñazú, the Director of Mining, Jerónimo Shantal, and the Mayor of Las Heras, Francisco Lo Presti.”
