China and Italy launch joint satellite to detect precursor signals of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions

A new satellite developed by the **China National Space Administration (CNSA)** and the **Italian Space Agency (ASI)** was launched with the aim of detecting **electromagnetic phenomena** in the ionosphere related to **high-intensity earthquakes and [volcanic eruptions](https://noticiasambientales.com/ciencia/los-glaciares-pueden-prevenir-erupciones-que-dice-la-ciencia/)**.

## Advanced Instrumentation for Studying Earth from Space
The CSES-02 is equipped with **eleven scientific instruments**, including:
– A **High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-02)**
– An **Electric Field Detector (EFD-02)**

Both were developed in Italy and are designed to study the **flow of energy and matter** between the **Earth’s crust, atmosphere, and ionosphere**, an electrically charged layer that reacts to extreme geophysical events.

## Anticipating Earthquakes: A Scientific Frontier
The **CSES-01** mission had already shown that **acoustic-gravitational waves** generated by earthquakes or eruptions can **reach the ionosphere within minutes**, causing disturbances detectable from space.

Now, with more sensitive instrumentation, the **CSES-02** will seek to detect **weaker and earlier signals**, which could be used as **early indicators** of the onset of major seismic events.

Both satellites orbit at an altitude of about **500 kilometers** and provide **faster and wider global coverage**, ideal for the constant monitoring of natural phenomena.

In addition to its seismic objectives, the constellation will also study:
– Geomagnetic storms
– Cosmic ray flows
– Wave-particle interactions in Earth’s radiation belts
– Ionospheric disturbances linked to astrophysical events, such as gamma-ray bursts

These phenomena, known as **space weather**, affect everything from telecommunications to satellite infrastructure, making their monitoring vital for **global technological security**.
