Researchers have made a significant discovery in the province of Cotopaxi, Ecuador: a new species of parasitic fly. The news, confirmed by the National Institute of Biodiversity, marks a milestone in the country’s insect record.
A new parasitic fly in the Ecuadorian Andes
This finding in the central Andes highlights how much there is still to learn about insects and reinforces Ecuador’s reputation as a global biodiversity hotspot.
The fly, identified as Ptilodexia argentea and belonging to the family Tachinidae, was described by experts from Europe and the National Institute of Biodiversity. Found at over 3,100 meters altitude in El Chasqui, this is the first record of the Ptilodexia genus in Ecuador.
The discovery in Cotopaxi by the team led by Marcelo Domingos de Santis and Ximo Mengual demonstrates the scientific potential of the region. These international collaborations have been key to increasing knowledge about the distribution of this group in the Neotropics.
Ecological contributions of the new species
Besides its contribution to scientific knowledge, this parasitic fly offers a crucial ecological role by controlling insect populations. Although the hosts of Ptilodexia argentea remain a mystery, the genus is known for its parasitoid larvae of beetles.
The scientific name of the species, inspired by its silver-colored abdomen, reflects one of its distinctive characteristics. This unique coloration is not only an aesthetic feature but also helps differentiate it from other nearby species.
Ecuador, famous for its extraordinary biodiversity, still has unexplored areas, especially regarding insects like tachinid flies. It is estimated that the number of species of this family in the country is much higher than currently documented.
