Introducing Sauron, a new species of vegetarian piranha.

A group of biologists has made an astonishing discovery in the renowned Amazon River: a new species of vegetarian fish that resembles a piranha, but with unique characteristics that set it apart.

Named as “Mylopus sauron”, this species has captured the attention of scientists due to its peculiar eye of fire, reminiscent of Sauron’s eye from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings saga.

This new species of pacu, belonging to the piranha family, despite its intimidating appearance, is vegetarian. It mainly feeds on vegetation and fruits, despite having teeth similar to humans.

With a body of up to one meter in length and a weight of 20 kilograms, Mylopus sauron stands out for its orange and black markings, featuring a vertical black bar resembling the symbol of Sauron’s eye of fire.

The discovery of this vegetarian piranha and its importance for conservation

Researchers came across Mylopus sauron while studying a very similar species, Mylopus schomburgkii, first discovered in the Amazon in 1841.

Through genetic and physical analyses, they discovered that there were actually three distinct species: Mylopus schomburgkii, Mylopus sauron, and Mylopus aylan. These species exhibit physiological differences that are almost imperceptible, making their identification quite challenging.

The biodiversity in the Amazon River is vast, and it is estimated that many species unknown to science still inhabit its waters. The discovery of Mylopus sauron underscores the importance of conducting species inventories to understand and conserve ecosystems properly.

The loss of species before knowing them can have serious consequences for the balance of nature.

Conclusions about the discovery

Mylopus sauron is an example of the diversity and beauty of life in the Amazon River. Its unique appearance and herbivorous diet make it stand out among the fish species in the region.

Researchers will continue to study this new species to better understand its evolution and its relationship with other species. Each discovery in nature gives us the opportunity to learn and protect our planet more consciously.
