After two years of inactivity, the **ARA “Austral” Oceanographic Vessel**, operated by the **Naval Hydrography Service (SHN)** and belonging to **CONICET**, resumed its [scientific campaigns](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/cientificos-confirman-que-el-virus-de-la-gripe-aviar-ya-esta-presente-en-pinguinos-de-la-antartida/) in the South Atlantic in August 2024 with an expedition to **Golfo San Jorge and the Tierra del Fuego platform**.

This return, the result of cooperation between **CONICET, SHN, and the Ministry of Defense**, reaffirms the role of the **Austral** as an essential platform for [deep-sea studies](https://noticiasambientales.com/ciencia/investigadores-revelan-un-increible-descubrimiento-en-el-fondo-del-mar/).

Equipped with **cutting-edge technology**, the vessel has:
– **Echo sounders and oceanographic systems**.
– **Specialized winches and maneuvering cables**.
– **Capability to operate in the Argentine Basin**.

## The South Atlantic and its climatic importance
The **South Atlantic Ocean** plays a **critical role** in the **distribution of heat between hemispheres** and in **global precipitation patterns**.

The SHN leads the component of the **Southwestern Atlantic** within the international initiative **SAMOC** (*South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation*), which monitors the **meridional circulation of the Atlantic (AMOC)**.

Together with **CONICET**, the SHN contributes to the **SAMBA** system, deployed in **2009**, which integrates:
– **Oceanic moorings and inverted echo sounders**.
– **Pressure sensors (PIES)**.
– **High-resolution hydrographic sections**.

These data are **essential** for understanding the **variability of the AMOC over long time scales**.

## Recovery of scientific instruments in the South Atlantic
On **April 2nd**, the **Austral** successfully **recovered drifting scientific instruments** after a failed attempt by the German vessel **RV Polarstern**.

Under **adverse weather conditions**, the operation ensured the **preservation of valuable data** for global research.

This mission was led by **Captain de Navío Sergio Fabián Ciminari**, within the framework of the **Hydrographic and Oceanographic Research Support Unit (UNIHDO)**, a joint initiative of **CONICET and SHN**.

## Cooperation between science, technology, and defense
**Rear Admiral Hernán Montero**, Director of the SHN, highlighted that this operation:
– **Reaffirms Argentina’s ability** to operate in distant waters.
– **Demonstrates the State’s commitment** to the defense of its scientific interests.
– **Strengthens institutional cooperation**, integrating **high-level human and technological resources**.

From **CONICET**, participation in these projects reaffirms the commitment of the **national scientific system** to the study of **key processes on a global scale**, consolidating **Argentina’s presence in the South Atlantic**.
