How to build ecologically with superadobe

The superadobe, developed by architect Nader Khalili, is an ecological and economical construction technique based on the use of dry earth to build highly resistant and efficient structures.

This method allows for the creation of self-sufficient and energy-efficient homes without the need for expensive materials or specialized machinery.

Advantages of superadobe

  • Quick construction without the need for sophisticated equipment.
  • Less labor-intensive, accessible to anyone.
  • Reduced cost by using natural materials.
  • High resistance to hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
  • Thermal and acoustic insulation maintaining stable indoor temperatures.
  • Adaptable structure designed according to individual preferences.
  • Low waste generation minimizing environmental impact.

Construction process

To build a home with superadobe, the following steps must be followed:

  1. Choose a stable terrain and excavate the area designated for the house’s foundation.
  2. Create building blocks by filling cloth bags with dry earth and sand.
  3. Stack the bags and secure them to form the structure’s walls.
  4. Design the home’s shape, leaving spaces for doors and windows.
  5. Close the upper structure using the same bags.
  6. Coat the bags with a mixture of earth and water, creating a solid mud that seals the surface.
  7. Apply the coating to the floor and window frames to reinforce the stability of the whole.
  8. Decorate with natural materials such as stones or shells to personalize the home.
  9. Let it dry and sand the surface to achieve a polished and aesthetic finish.

More than a house: a sustainable home

The superadobe transforms construction into an accessible and environmentally friendly solution.

In addition to its energy efficiency, this method allows people to build their own homes without depending on large industries.

With their hands as the only tool, the builder molds their space, giving life to durable homes tailored to every need.
