Missions has launched a campaign to curb poaching and protect its biodiversity, encompassing educational and control actions.
The Minister of Ecology, Martín Recamán, presented the campaign in Puerto Libertad, emphasizing the importance of protecting the 52% of Argentina’s biodiversity hosted by the province.
Importance of Misiones’ Wildlife
Recamán emphasized that Misiones hosts 50% of Argentina’s jaguars, highlighting the need to conserve this fauna. Park rangers have carried out more than 100 operations this year to combat poaching, facing dangers and armed hunters.
Issue of Poaching
Poaching in Misiones includes hunting for sport, pleasure, or personal consumption, and a black market that traffics skins, bones, and birds to Brazil and Paraguay. Misiones’ geographical location, surrounded by these countries, contributes to the problem.
Protection Measures
The Ministry of Ecology addresses the issue through control and awareness, conducting operations and educational campaigns. Park rangers are armed for safety, and citizens can report poaching to 911.
Prevention of Wildlife Roadkill
For the upcoming weekend, activities are being coordinated within the “I brake for wildlife” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing speed in protected areas.
Misiones has 33 wildlife crossings and the first eco-bridge in Latin America to prevent roadkill. Respecting traffic rules is vital to avoid incidents that affect species like the jaguar.
Current Management and Projects
This year, Misiones has added 10 private reserves and is developing a project of carbon credits to benefit small landowners. “Misiones is a model of conservation on an international level,” Recamán concluded.
