Progress of four greenhouses in native plant nurseries in San Luis

With the main objective of increasing the production of native trees and plants in the forestry projection of San Luis, the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development is advancing in the construction of greenhouses in nurseries located in Quines, San Francisco del Monte de Oro, Villa Mercedes, and the city of San Luis.

Each of these spaces will play a fundamental role in enhancing the nurseries and plantations in the provincial urban tree planting and, especially, in obtaining a key tool in the production of native plants adapted to the climatic conditions of each ecoregion.

Utility and benefits of greenhouses

Greenhouses are glass or plastic structures designed primarily to protect plants from climatic fluctuations and their phenomena.

This system allows protected production, minimizing the effects of extreme temperatures, damage caused by hail and strong winds, and also offers protection against pests.

The growth process inside the greenhouse is adaptive, allowing plants to grow in the first stage between 50 to 70 centimeters. In a key second stage, the plant goes through the hardening process, gradually generating natural conditions.

First, they are in the greenhouse and then, part of that time they are outside the structure, but with a different type of covering, providing protection during the coldest moments in San Luis, especially during the months of June, July, and August.

Benefits of greenhouses

Regarding the benefits, the Head of Public Spaces Tree Planting, Eugenio Barroso, indicated that greenhouses are a great opportunity to implement projects that encourage planting adapted to the characteristics of each region.

“Greenhouses allow creating a controlled environment, adjusting the temperature, solar radiation, and protecting plants from winds. Furthermore, it allows verifying irrigation, generating precise conditions in measuring environmental conditions.”

The official also highlighted that each place will create new opportunities thanks to the agreement signed with the National University of San Luis (UNSL) for researchers and thesis students to enhance their studies and approaches.

Similarly, students will have another space to complete their professional internships, promoting academic training.
