The Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene of Buenos Aires receives recognition for leadership in sustainability at the BritCham Argentina Awards 2024

The Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene of the City of Buenos Aires obtained the second place in the BritCham Argentina Awards for Leadership in Sustainability 2024, in the Public Sector category. This recognition, granted by the Argentine-British Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the work of the new mixed waste treatment plant at the City’s Recycling Center (CRC), which has a positive impact on the economic, social, and environmental areas.

“This award is a recognition of the commitment we have to sustainability and the work that thousands of people do every day to have a clean and orderly city. The new mixed waste plant allows us to recover 500 tons of waste every day that used to be sent to landfills. We continue to lead as one of the pioneering cities in urban recycling,” said Minister Ignacio Baistrocchi.

Inaugurated last July, the mixed waste treatment plant is one of the six plants that are part of the CRC, located in Villa Soldati. Its main function is to process materials that cannot be processed by the other CRC plants, nor by the City’s Green Centers, nor by scheduled collection based on calls to 147 (requests for removal of small construction debris, domestic pruning, or household goods no longer in use).

Through mechanical and manual processes, the recovered material is classified into fractions that allow its commercialization or transformation into new products. This not only significantly reduces the amount of waste ending up in landfills, but also promotes the circular economy.

In addition to the mixed waste treatment plant, at the City’s Recycling Center, there are also plants for treating aggregates, organic waste, forest remains, plastics, and an educational center.
