Starting from the 1st of November, the imposing Lake Viedma will once again receive lake excursions, after more than seven years on hold.
The company Solo Patagonia is launching the new tourist product “Aventura Viedma”, a proposal that integrates scenic navigation, gentle walks, and privileged views of the homonymous glacier, in one of the most majestic environments of the Los Glaciares National Park.
A journey between blue ice and mountains
The excursion departs from Bahía Túnel and allows exploring glacier landscapes in a safe and accessible way.
The tour starts at Puerto Bahía Túnel, 18 km from El Chaltén, with daily departures at 11 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. The experience includes:
40-minute navigation on the lake, with views of the Huemul Massif
- Low-difficulty trekking to a natural viewpoint in the Icebergs Bay
- Approach to the front of the Viedma Glacier, where specialized guides interpret its history and formation
The contrast between the blue ice of the glacier and the turquoise waters of the lake offers an unforgettable postcard of deep Patagonia.

Logistics and vessels: infrastructure for responsible tourism
Two catamarans will transport hundreds of visitors in safe and comfortable conditions.
The launch of the service involved a complex logistical operation. The first catamaran, Glaciar Viedma, with a capacity for 148 passengers, has already been transported by land.
In October, the arrival of the second boat, ALM, is expected, which can carry up to 248 people. Both will enhance lake tourism in the region, with safety and sustainability standards.
Lake Viedma: record depth and glacial origin
A Patagonian giant that combines geographical, scientific, and touristic value.
- Maximum depth of 900 meters, the deepest lake in America and the fifth in the world
- Glacial origin, formed by erosion during the last glaciation
- Strategic location in the southwest of Santa Cruz, within the Los Glaciares National Park
- Length of 80 km, the longest lake in Argentina
A destination for adventure and knowledge
The return of excursions opens new opportunities for tourism and scientific research.
Lake Viedma is ideal for:
- Adventure tourism: navigation, trekking, and iceberg observation
- Scientific studies: monitoring glacier variations and dynamics of the Southern Ice Field
After its suspension in 2018 due to the glacier retreat, the return of excursions marks a touristic rebirth for those visiting El Chaltén and seeking to experience Patagonia in its purest state.
