## The Most Amazing Beach in Japan
The most famous photo currently was taken by **Hisa (@ag.lr.88 on Instagram)**. The natural phenomenon shown in the image, where snow, sand, and sea come together, does not happen all the time.
It usually occurs in **mid-January and February**. It is due to the fact that the **mouth of the Tokachi River freezes every winter**, leading to the formation of ice blocks that reach the beach in the city of Toyokoro.
This conjunction of natural elements is known as **”jewel ice”**. It is a highly visited attraction by tourists and photography enthusiasts.
The landscape seems to be taken from a fairy tale or a painting: you can walk on snow and sand at the same time.
## Hokkaido Island
Hokkaido is the northernmost of Japan’s main islands. It is **famous for its volcanoes, natural hot springs (onsen)**, and ski areas.
In **Daisetsuzan National Park**, you can find the smoking volcanic Mount Asahi. **Shikotsu-Toya National Park** features crater lakes, hot springs, and Mount Yotei, similar to Mount Fuji. Among the popular ski resorts are Rusutsu, Furano, and Niseko.
Daisetsuzan is the largest national park in Japan, covering **2267.64 square kilometers**. It consists of three groups of volcanic mountains, formed by **stacked stratovolcanoes**:
1. **Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group:** in the northern part of the park, including Hokkaido’s highest mountain, Mount Asahi.
2. **Tokachi Volcanic Group:** located in the southwest of the park, north of the Yubari and Hidaka mountains. It includes Mount Tokachi.
3. **Shikaribetsu Volcanic Group:** in the eastern part of the park, including Mount **Ishikari**.
