In a new display of environmental commitment, representatives from Argentina and France held a virtual meeting to launch the second phase of the project “Sustainable Mountains in the Alps and Patagonia”, a cooperation initiative between the Government of Neuquén, the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, and the NGO Tétraktys.
The project aims to strengthen ties between mountain communities in both hemispheres, promoting a tourism development model that prioritizes ecosystem conservation, social inclusion, and environmental education.
This new phase builds on the lessons learned from the previous program, “Mountains and Lakes,” with the goal of increasing youth participation in activities related to caring for the natural environment and promoting sustainable tourism.

Youth, sustainability, and local development
The cooperation includes joint actions to train young people as ecotourism ambassadors, promote responsible hiking, and encourage good environmental practices in mountain areas.
In this way, the aim is to strengthen territorial identity and generate economic opportunities in harmony with nature, especially in Patagonian destinations such as Villa La Angostura and Villa Traful.
The agreement also includes the installation of autonomous sanitation systems in these localities, an advancement that will reduce pollution and improve water management, one of the main challenges in regions with high tourist visitation.
Green infrastructure and technical cooperation
The first stage of the program, developed between 2023 and 2025, consolidated a network of work between Argentine and French institutions, focusing on sustainable territorial planning and the management of protected areas.
The agreement provides for technical missions and field training to exchange knowledge on green infrastructure, ecological sanitation, and responsible tourism practices.
It also supports provincial investments in connectivity and sustainable mobility, such as the improvement of the asphalt on Provincial Route 65 towards Villa Traful, a key project to strengthen accessibility without compromising the environmental integrity of the landscape.

Ecotourism and mountain care
Ecotourism is one of the most effective strategies to balance economic development and environmental preservation. In highly fragile environments like the Patagonian mountain range, this tourism modality promotes respect for biodiversity, waste reduction, and the responsible use of natural resources.
Mountain activities, such as hiking or climbing, foster a conscious connection with nature, promote environmental education, and strengthen the local economy through community employment.
Caring for the mountain also means caring for its water balance, its fauna, and its flora, essential components to mitigate the effects of climate change and conserve the ecosystem services that benefit the entire region.
An alliance for the future of mountain territories
The agreement between Argentina and France is consolidated as a model of international cooperation oriented towards climate action and sustainable development.
Both countries share similar challenges: tourism pressure, the effects of global warming, and the need to preserve their natural environments in the face of urban growth and infrastructure expansion.
The Sustainable Mountains initiative not only strengthens ties between the Alps and Patagonia but also projects a global message: the protection of mountains is essential for the ecological balance of the planet.
In a context where tourism and nature must coexist in harmony, this type of project becomes a key tool to ensure that progress is measured not only in economic growth but also in environmental and social well-being.
