Three rural gems from the province of Corrientes —San Miguel, Loreto, and Carlos Pellegrini— have been nominated to participate in the 2025 edition of the prestigious Best Tourism Villages competition promoted by the United Nations. This recognition highlights villages that promote tourism as a driver of sustainable development, while conserving biodiversity and local culture.

Argentina will present a total of eight candidates on May 22nd to the Ministry of Tourism, as part of a process aimed at showcasing destinations with authentic proposals and environmental commitment. Out of the 30 preselected villages, 60% are participating for the first time, reflecting an increasing interest from rural communities in integrating a model of tourism respectful of the environment.

For example, the province of Salta registered six destinations, including the unique case of Cachi, known for its “ovniport,” a tourist attraction that combines science fiction with Andean landscapes.

Jujuy, on the other hand, leads with four villages: Yala, El Fuerte, Maimará, and Yavi, all set in unique natural environments such as the Yungas, the Puna, and the Quebrada de Humahuaca, territories renowned for their cultural and ecological richness.

Corrientes bets on conservation and ecotourism

The Argentine villages nominated by Corrientes have a strong connection with nature. Carlos Pellegrini, in the heart of the Esteros del Iberá, is an example of regenerative tourism, where wetland conservation, native fauna, and collaborative work with Guaraní communities have turned the region into an ecotourism icon.

San Miguel and Loreto also stand out for their proximity to natural reserves, their preserved colonial architecture, and their active involvement in environmental education and circular economy projects. These communities promote local-based tourism, prioritizing land conservation and traditions.

What is the Best Tourism Villages competition?

The Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO is a program led by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a United Nations agency, that recognizes villages distinguished by their sustainable approach to tourism, the protection of natural and cultural environments, and the empowerment of rural communities.

The selected villages must demonstrate commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in areas such as environmental conservation, social inclusion, rural innovation, and respect for indigenous cultures.

In addition to the recognition, the selected villages gain access to mentoring programs and international cooperation networks, allowing them to improve their practices in conservation, local governance, and tourism planning.

In previous editions, Argentine villages like La Carolina (San Luis) and Caspalá (Jujuy) were distinguished, consolidating the country’s potential in rural and responsible tourism. Now, new communities like those in Corrientes are seeking to join the global map of sustainable destinations with a green spirit.
