Chile invites to care for the mountains as part of responsible and eco-friendly tourism.

With the arrival of snow in **Chile**, the **mountain landscapes** once again dress in white, attracting winter sports enthusiasts and lovers from all over the world. But beyond the visual spectacle and sports possibilities, the season also presents **challenges in terms of safety and environmental care**, so the neighboring country invites to take care of the mountains.

In this context, **Andes Consciente** reappears, an initiative that seeks to **educate and raise awareness** in the community about the importance of making responsible decisions in the mountains. Born almost a decade ago, the organization promotes open sessions to strengthen the culture of respect for the natural environment.

The activities are **focused on both beginners and experienced skiers**, and include training on accident prevention, planning outings, and leadership in winter terrain. The proposal encourages a more responsible bond with the mountains and their dynamics.

This year, **the sessions will be 100% in-person** and will take place in various locations in southern Chile, such as **Corralco, Pucón, and Coyhaique**. In addition to being free, they offer an opportunity to build community and reinforce key knowledge before each season.

## Education to Care for the Mountains and Future Winters

Learning in the field **allows one to become aware of natural risks**, such as avalanches or sudden climate changes, common in mountain areas. Faced with these scenarios, **knowing how to act can make the difference** between enjoying or risking one’s life.

But the proposal is not limited to personal safety. It also aims to **strengthen an ecological perspective** that understands snow as part of a sensitive ecosystem, now threatened by climate change and excessive human activity.

Initiatives like **Andes Consciente** represent **a concrete step towards responsible tourism and sustainable recreation**. The mountain is not only a space for enjoyment: it is a living environment that requires care, commitment, and a conscious community to preserve it.

## The Environmental Importance of the Andes

The Andes are **essential for regulating the climate and ecosystems** of South America. With their great biodiversity, they provide refuge for **endemic species** and are crucial for **water supply**, as their glaciers feed **important rivers in the region**.

Moreover, the Andes act as **carbon sinks**, helping mitigate global climate change. Their forests and moorlands capture CO2 and **filter pollutants**, improving air quality. However, deforestation and other human activities threaten these vital services.

Protecting the Andes **is crucial to maintain their ecological and social balance**. The conservation of their key areas and the promotion of sustainable development in the region are essential to ensure their role in environmental stability and the well-being of local communities.
