In response to a complaint from residents in the area, the Justice ordered to halt the construction work on a path in Los Glaciares.
The precautionary measure, issued by the Federal Court of RÃo Gallegos, under the responsibility of Judge Claudio Marcelo Vázquez, is a result of an environmental protection lawsuit.
Parques Nacionales is accused of carrying out earth movements, deforestation, and native forest clearing without environmental impact assessment or citizen participation.
Construction work halted on a path in Los Glaciares
Seven neighbors near Los Glaciares National Park filed a complaint on March 12, 2025, against the national administration staff. They point out the actions taken in an area protected by Law 26.331 (native forests law).
Construction work is being carried out in Los Glaciares National Park.
The ruling ordering the precautionary measure acknowledges the existence of serious environmental impact in an area of high ecological and touristic value. The judge highlighted the plausibility of the right invoked by the plaintiffs and cited Article 41 of the National Constitution, which guarantees the right to a healthy environment.
As reported by the local media Ahora Calafate, Parques Nacionales stated that the work is related to the redesign of the Laguna de Los Tres trail, for which materials will need to be transported using a UTV vehicle.
However, the explanation did not satisfy the complainants, who protested in a massive march in El Chalten. They also filed a lawsuit in federal court to raise the protection order that Judge Vázquez has now decided on.
What does the precautionary measure state?
The measure orders to immediately cease all unauthorized trail opening works, although it clarifies that maintenance tasks are allowed, and will remain in force until the APN responds with a detailed report on the reported incidents.
The judge emphasized that environmental protection is a “State duty” and a constitutional priority, especially in a place like El Chaltén, internationally recognized for its natural and ecological value.
Parques Nacionales confirmed to the same source that they were formally notified of the judicial resolution on Friday.
Navigation had to be suspended due to large icebergs near the Perito Moreno Glacier.
The importance of preserving national parks
In addition to the tourism contributions, the conservation and protection of national parks are essential for many aspects. Among the benefits they provide, we can mention:
-
Biodiversity conservation: they protect native species, many of which are endangered. The wildlife and flora inhabiting these spaces are essential for ecological balance.
-
Promotion of ecotourism: they have become important tourist destinations that promote ecotourism. Activities such as hiking, wildlife observation, and nature photography attract tourists from all over the world.
-
Environmental education: National Parks also have an educational role, teaching the population about the importance of caring for natural resources and the environment.
