Green tourism based on the use of medicinal plants and nature: cannabis, health and well-being on the rise

Around the world, a new way of traveling is gaining strength: wellness tourism based on the use of medicinal plants such as cannabis. This trend combines nature, health, relaxation, and education, redefining the traditional tourist experience.

From Thailand to Missouri, resorts and boutique hotels offer comprehensive programs that combine cannabis with yoga, gastronomy, meditation, and personalized care. The idea is simple: to integrate cannabis into experiences designed for physical and emotional balance, with safety and environmental awareness.

The growth is remarkable. In 2022, cannabis tourism generated over 17 billion dollars. It is projected that this number will exceed 23 billion by 2030, driven by more flexible legal frameworks and the search for natural alternatives for health and stress.

This movement is accompanied by a shift in travelers’ preferences, who are increasingly interested in alcohol-free and purposeful options. Cannabis ceases to be taboo and becomes a tool to reconnect with the body, nature, and oneself.

Cannabis and the Environment: More Than Just a Trend

Conscious use of cannabis not only benefits human health but can also be an ally of the planet. Unlike other industries, responsible cannabis cultivation allows for sustainable agricultural practices, with crop rotation, reduced use of pesticides, and restoration of degraded soils.

Additionally, hemp, derived from cannabis, is an ecological raw material with industrial applications: it is used in construction, fashion, and even biotechnology. It requires little water and captures carbon from the environment, helping to combat climate change.

Integrating these approaches into tourist projects allows for the creation of sustainable ecosystems where local economy, health, and the natural environment coexist. Places like The Beach Samui or Lifted Lodging are examples of how this model can scale, educate, and regenerate territories.

Comprehensive Health and Benefits of Medicinal Cannabis

In densely populated urban areas, where stress, pollution, and limited access to mental health are common, medicinal cannabis offers an alternative and complementary approach. Studies indicate that its components—such as CBD—help reduce anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, and inflammation.

These properties make it an effective resource for treating symptoms without strong adverse effects, especially among older people, cancer patients, or those looking to avoid more aggressive medications. Its potential in neurological and digestive disorders is also being researched.

From an ecological perspective, locally grown cannabis reduces the carbon footprint by avoiding pharmaceutical imports. When integrated into community clinics or urban wellness centers, it promotes equitable access, reduces the use of synthetic drugs, and offers more sustainable solutions for overwhelmed healthcare systems.

A Path Towards the Future of Conscious Tourism

The future of cannabis tourism is far from uncontrolled consumption. The key lies in experiences that integrate wellness, culture, sustainability, and education. Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean already show solid examples of how this new hospitality can boost local economies without losing the ecological focus.

This paradigm shift aims for a more respectful hospitality towards people and the environment, with purpose-driven retreats: spaces for healing, learning, and living in harmony with nature and with oneself.
