Arroyo Ludueña: Two months into the sanitation project, tons of waste removed.

The cleaning and sanitation of the Ludueña Stream in Santa Fe began about two months ago. Since then, approximately 500 tons of waste have been removed.

This was estimated by local media, based on information from the authorities. The stream that runs through Rosario and 15 other localities was affected by the behavior of users and economic and industrial activities nearby.

Therefore, at the end of 2024, an integral approach plan was implemented to clean up the Ludueña stream basin. The work is located in a northwestern sector of Rosario for the removal and disposal of waste that is thrown and left in the water.

Two backhoe machines are being used, each with a 9-meter long arm. This allows simultaneous work in two areas of the stream to protect biodiversity.

## Ludueña Stream: 500 tons of waste removed

According to the authorities, after more than 60 days of work, the workers collected tons of waste from the stream. Among them, urban solids such as paper, cardboard, glass, metals, and plastics predominate.

Organic matter is also distinguished, as well as sanitary waste, old or damaged appliances, furniture, electrical and electronic devices, and used clothing.

Preliminary estimates indicate that approximately 500 tons of waste were removed from a northwestern area of Rosario, as reported by the local newspaper *La Capital*.

## Stages of the sanitation plan

The cleaning tasks are part of the Ludueña Basin Approach Plan, which aims to provide solutions to a historical problem.

It covers issues ranging from flood risk and changes in land use to the impact of economic activities and irregular settlements, as well as the presence of solid waste and unauthorized discharges in a specific area.

The Ministry of Public Works, through the Water Resources Secretariat, presented the stream cleaning plan in December.

Now, one of the machines is working on the streambed, removing waste from the banks. The other is taking them out and depositing them on the west bank, where trucks will later take them away.

At the end of the year, an 18-meter, 32-ton backhoe was used, working from the inside to minimize the impact on the vegetation.

## Lines of work

“It is the first step in seeking solutions to a historical problem, adopting a socio-environmental perspective that considers both the natural environment of the basin and the economic and social dynamics surrounding it,” authorities stated.

The Ludueña Basin Approach Plan has three lines of work and action:
Citizen participation: Residents participated in the public hearing process can be involved in planning and executing actions to improve the basin.
Urban transformations: Direct interventions on the territory. Jointly with the Ministry of Public Works of the province and the Municipality, cleaning work is carried out in critical areas, primarily in the neighborhoods of *Stella Maris and La Bombacha*.
– Complementation through other programs such as Focused Neighborhood Interventions (IBF) from the Ministry of Justice and Security, and the *Plan Abre* from the Ministry of Equality and Human Development. Through these programs, urban infrastructure and services are provided, and comprehensive social support is provided in the most affected areas.
