For a cleaner future: the impact of selective waste collection in Bahía Blanca

Most read

Garbage represents a significant worldwide problem. In particular, Argentina produces an average of 45,000 tons of household waste daily, which is equivalent to one ton of waste every two seconds. One way to take care of the environment is by separating waste at the source through separate collection.

In this context, Bahía Blanca is one of the few cities in Argentina that has a municipal separate waste collection service, with the aim of reducing and revaluing waste generated in homes.

Bahía Recicla Program and results of separate collection

Separate collection, which already covers 88 neighborhoods in the city (95% coverage estimated), is an essential part of the Bahía Recicla program, launched by the municipality in March of last year with the main objective of revaluing recyclable waste and promoting environmentally responsible management.

Until October of last year, the last month with official information, 346,500 kilos of recyclable material had been collected by households in Bahía Blanca. Of this total, 134,272 corresponded to plastics; 82,259 to glass; 82,512 to paper and cardboard; 13,798 to tetra packaging, and 12,997 to metals.

Benefits and guidelines of separate collection

The benefits of separate collection are manifold: from reducing the volume and environmental impact of solid waste destined for landfills, to eliminating open dumps and organizing the informal collection circuit of solid waste for recycling.

What can be put in the dry waste bag?

  • Clean and dry paper and cardboard.
  • Plastics of all types (bottles, wrappers, sachets, yogurt containers, spreads, candy wrappers, pasta, rice packages, etc.).
  • Tetra Pak containers.
  • Nylon.
  • Styrofoam.
  • Metal such as cans, deodorants, etc.
  • Glass (only if properly wrapped to avoid injuring collectors).

What does not go in the dry waste bag?

  • Batteries (can be disposed of at any branch of the Cooperativa Obrera).
  • Pruning branches or large quantities of construction waste.
