In the context of the Coastal Census and Cleaning Program promoted by the provincial Government of Chubut, the technical team of the Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development Control collected more than 100 kilos of garbage on Santa Isabel and Isla Escondida beaches during the past week. This initiative, led by Governor Ignacio “Nacho” Torres’ administration, aims to preserve the coastal ecosystems of the Chubut coastline.

During days covering a two-kilometer route within the Rawson Coastal Unit, scattered waste was removed both at the tide line and in nearby continental areas. In fact, the collected waste, stemming from poor waste management on fishing boats and recreational activities on the coast, was transported for proper disposal.

On Santa Isabel beach, significant amounts of industrial waste of fishing origin were found, such as plastic crates, ropes, and sulphite buckets carried by marine currents. Meanwhile, urban waste predominated on Isla Escondida, including plastic bottles, cans, papers, cardboard, and glass, mainly left behind by users and campers.

In addition to the collection, the Environment Secretariat is progressing with the 2024/2025 campaign of the Coastal Waste Census, which has been working on the beaches of Península Valdés, Puerto Madryn, Camarones, and other coastal units since September. The censuses conducted during these days were crucial for the provincial Government, as they gathered data to develop public policies aimed at conserving these spaces. For this, they will work together with coastal municipalities and other provincial bodies, strengthening the comprehensive waste management in the region.

Commitment to sustainability and the collected kilos of garbage

The Environment Secretariat emphasized the importance of not abandoning waste on the beaches and urged users to remove the waste generated during their visit.

Environment Secretary Juan José Rivera highlighted: “We understand that clean beaches are essential for a healthy ecosystem and a safe environment. This program is not only an environmental commitment but also an act of responsibility towards future generations.”

The actions led by the Chubut Government demonstrate an active commitment to environmental protection, seeking to ensure healthy coastal ecosystems and safe spaces for current and future generations. This effort reaffirms the importance of working collectively to build a more sustainable future for the Chubut community.

How do waste harm beaches?

Waste found on beaches can pose significant risks to the environment. In fact, the garbage on the coasts can damage physical habitats, transfer chemical pollutants, and threaten aquatic species, among other dangers.

They can even restrict the use of beaches for recreational, economic, and aesthetic purposes due to pollution. Furthermore, they can cause economic losses in sectors dependent on the sea or introduce invasive species on the coasts.
